Motorola MPx200

I picked one of these up yesterday…after calling AT&T a few times (I’m an existing customer), I got the impression that it would be a week or so before I had it in my hands. So I called the local Best Buy, and they had a whole box of them – so about a half hour after that, I had one in my hands!

I have to say, this is a pretty cool device. In fact, my only complaint so far is that certain mMode functions (like the location services) don’t work…or, more specifically, they don’t show up on the mMode menu. If you type in the secret URLs, some of them will work, but some of them show errors. I would hope AT&T will get these things worked out soon.

Ok, two more complaints…it runs SmartPhone 2002 (instead of 2003, so only one email box), and no camera. But hey, we can’t have everything all at once! ;-)

Great form factor, though – my first impression is that I think Motorola did a great job with this phone.

Well…with the headphones that come with the phone, they sound a bit bass-challenged. I’ve heard, though, that with better quality headphones it’s much better. Haven’t tried them myself, but I’ll post about it if I do.

Hi, I have also purchased the Motorola MPx200 (In UK).

I was wondering, I tried to transfer some music into the phone via ActiveSync. However, at the very end of the process I received an error message. Basically saying I’ve run out of memory. I have 16MB card and only used 7MB of it. The music was only 3.4mb whats the deal?

Did this ever happen to you yet?

    (hopefully not)

I’m in the process of getting a larger Flash card. 256mb if it exists.

J Parker (from the uk), Trying to get hold of an MPX200 but really struggling. Could you let me know where you bought yours. Everyone I’ve tried is out of stock. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do you use the voice tag on the mpx200. I assigned a voice tag to my contact but do not know what is the “record” button from the home screen. any suggestions?

To use the voice tag (after it’s recorded), just press the roller button on the side of the phone straight in. It takes a certain touch to get it to work – the best advice is press the button straight in, and press it very quickly.

  7. tp,

I’ve been a mobile phone user every day since 1983. It seems like I’ve had them all. Now I’ve got the MPx200 with the Smartphone 2002 OS. I don’t want a camera on the phone or need Bluetooth. The OS syncs with my PC very nicely and I’ve got 100’s of current contacts, 100’s of calendar dates, 80 emails a day and dozens of tasks set up. I’m kind of a power user of mMode, or mLife or whatever they call it. The phone has quirks, the OS has quirks, the reception in the countryside is nonexistent. I pretty much really like this phone in spite of its quirks. If you get one of these, don’t expect 100% satisfaction. There are some small issues with the phone, the OS and the reception. But if you have some patience, this is a really nice next generation phone, and at the current Amazon price of $0 its a great deal. Oh yeah one more thing, I’ve been on AT&T since it was McCaw Communications. 19 years. Weird huh?

I purchased an AT&T unlocked mpx200 from ebay. The phone can work for 6-7 hours standbay time only. Wher is the reason? Is the unlock procedure creating an “energy leak”? Did anybody have that problem too? Mike

As far as “energy leaks” go, keep these two things in mind when using an MPX200:

    1. When the phone is closed, it does not unmount or disconnect the SD/MMC card which can affect battery life

    2. When the phone is closed, it does not stop programs from running once closed it merely turns off the screen. So, if you have a game, movie, mp3 or any CPU intensive task running, make sure to press the HOME key before closing it to end that process.

Hi folks – My MPX200 was doing great until a few days back..when someone calls me, or I call out, the person at the other end is able to hear me loud and clear – but it is only after a few seconds (10-12 seconds, sometimes more, before I hear the person on the other side). Is there some setting that is causing it? Has anyone else faced this problem?

Anees, check out surreal networks. You need to join the forums first though but there’s a wealth of information there on unlocking, even upgrading MPX200 to WM5
