The “new” Napster
October 10th, 2003 by gregr
Since I was a pressplay subscriber, they switched my account over to the new Napster service beta. For those of you dying to know, it’s almost identical to the old PressPlay, but with a different GUI. The biggest change seems to be the name!

I’m getting faster downloads…maybe because it’s still in beta and not yet utilized to a significant extent.

Ah - I mostly stream, so I hadn’t noticed the bandwidth difference. I did have a streaming glitch yesterday with the WMP9 client, where all I would get is 30-second cuts of each song…I switched over to the regular Napster client, and all was well (full song streams). And this morning the WMP9 client is working fine too. Strange.

It seems to me to be a very strange marketing ploy and not much else. If they are trying to cash in on the old Napster by using the name, they are kidding themselves. The throngs of people that used the old Napster know what it was and what is was good for, and they are savvy enough to know what the new one is. Those folks aren’t going to suddenly decide that “oh, hey, I think I’ll PAY for music now because Napster is up again!” when they can still use Kazaa and such.

Used the service last night, and I must say they really have their act together. I found a ton of songs that are hard to find in local music stores. The ala carte ability to pick singles from albums for 99 cents or a full album for 10 bucks is a great feature. Buying this way allows me unlimited burns to CD’s. Gone are the days of returning to the music store to re-purchase a CD that has been lost or damaged. All this convenience from the comfort of my laptop and my PJ’s. Download speeds where 175kbs avg.. This is most definately the way to go.

I have been hearing the napster was the best and everyone loved napster, but i’m not sure everyone is satisfied with the new napster. I think i will not be getting napster. But i have a question…if i don’t get napster what is the next best music shared network there is. I just got my cable modem and im looking to download music and movies.

Actually, the new Napster pretty much rocks - a huge selection, unlimited streaming, and download prices about the same as other services.
