New Outlook News Aggregator Build

January 6th, 2003 by gregr

Version 0.2 is now ready! Perfect for those folks who refuse to use a 0.1 version of anything. :-) Here’s a rundown of what’s changed:

  • Improved RSS aggregator – removes numerous problems with certain RSS feeds.
  • Tray icon now changes (lightning bolt) when news is being retrieved.
  • Fixed insertion order of posts, so sorting within Outlook behaves as
    expected.
  • GUI is now responsive during news retrieval operations.
  • A retrieval cannot be triggered when a retrieval is already underway;
this solves some rare duplicate post problems.
  • The check news interval is now saved between sessions.

You can download the application, readme, and release notes here. And as before, please post your experiences!

Yesterday, I posted about the Outlook Newsreader that is coming to town. And I said I didn’t want to try it yet, because I needed to install some additional software. Well, Greg (the developer of the software) convinced and helped me, and now I got the thing running in version…[more]

I haven’t check it out in a while but Abe Fettig’s Hep is a Python ap that allows you to view RSS feeds in just about any e-mail app, not just Outlook- http://www.fettig.net/projects/hep/

Two other questions, if I may Greg: (1) Do you plan on releasing the source, and (2) What version of Aggie are you using?

  5. Greg Reinacker said:

Ziv, I haven’t yet decided whether the source will be released for this, or if it will evolve into a commercial product. And it’s using the current Aggie source as of January 5.

    Greg,
This is cool. One question though. The olnews.exe keeps running even after you have closed Outlook. I think the exe also needs to close with Outlook. Just a thought !!

This is excellent as an idea, but seems to have problems in implementation – early days I guess. It currently displays my name as the originator of all the items, as in

Installed, but for some reason, I’m only getting message titles — no message bodies. Strange.

Oh, duh — just read the release notes. My bad.

Nick, you’re right, that isn’t the intent…although in some cases it’s unavoidable. 0.4 doesn’t address the problem (other than hiding the From column on some installations), but I’m hoping the next version will.
